A Fun Last Day
June
6, 2006
What a great day! Students had tremendous fun cheering each other
on to dunk teachers, staff and volunteers in the Dunk Tank rented by
the PTA. Other indoor and outdoor games such as Karaoke, basketball,
hot potato, water balloon pass, bowling and more were all popular.
The weather was perfect (unless you were wet from the dunk tank)!
With temperature in the mid 70's with a light breeze under partly cloudy skies,
it was a picture perfect day.
The PTA offered students Burger King, Rita's Italian
Ice and Popcorn made fresh throughout the
day. A big thank you to the teachers, staff and volunteers who
helped make it all possible!
Last Day Assembly
June
5, 2006
The Avona PTA has booked the Harlem Wizards, a minor league
basketball team, to perform at the last day assembly.
The PTA also rented a Dunk Tank! Students will get a chance to
dunk a select few volunteer staff members. Luckily the weather looks
good, temperature in the mid 70's under partly cloudy skies. Thank
you brave teachers & staff!
The PTA will once again purchase Burger King and Rita's Italian
Ice for students. Popcorn will also be made fresh throughout the
day.

Avona builds a Mosaic
May 28, 2006
In January the
students at Avona began work on a tile mosaic. There's too much to
tell about this exciting project to fit in this small space, so I
created a whole page for it. Click on the picture of the mosaic
below or Click HERE to read all about how this mosaic was created and where to
find it!

Basket Bingo a Success
May 23, 2006
The Avona Elementary
School PTA hosted its first ever Longaberger Basket Bingo this past
Sunday, May 21, 2006 at the Easton Eagles.
Although turnout was
light, the PTA was able to net over $1,000. All proceeds go to
sponsor our after school programs, class trips and assemblies. If we
can grow this event next year, we may be able to do away with one of
our other student fundraisers, or expand our after school and other
programs.
Over 15 games of bingo were played. Among the prizes was a Spinning
Organizer basket, Carry Along basket, Letter Tray basket, Cake
basket, Small Waste basket with lid, and the new Cookie Jar basket
among others.
Special raffles include the Canister Set, Gourmet Picnic basket,
Wrought Iron Corner stand with 2 Corner baskets, and the Medium
Waste basket with lid. Food, drinks, a 50/50 drawing and many
Longaberger brand door prizes were awarded.
Thanks to all that
attended and helped put on this event.

March 4, 2006
After a 2 hour weather delay yesterday, award winning, author and illustrator Chris Soentpiet (SOON-peet) visited
Avona Elementary School to celebrate Read Across America Week with our
students. Due to the delay, there was one presentation for all classes.
Over sixty personally autographed books ordered in advance were given
to those students that placed orders.

Jump Rope for heart event at Avona on February 27th and 28th. Together
they raised $2,802.68 for the American Heart Association!
Our Gym teacher Mrs. Skutches kept the kids hopping and having a good
time. All students were provided with a snack donated by PTA and bottle

 The Math 24 Club,
an after school program held for several Thursday's has finished.
Students may continue to access Math 24 with their same User ID at
home or anywhere there is an Internet connection. The URL for Math
24 is:
www.FirstInMath.com. This program is designed to help your
child build their math skills at their own pace.
A big site needs
a powerful search tool. The Google "SafeSearch" above allows you to
limit your search to the Avona PTA site, or search the Internet. For our
children's safety, all searched sites and web pages containing adult
theme and explicit sexual content are excluded from the web search
results. Google does not constantly
update our site in their database. This means the results you find
on a Google search for our site lag behind our updates. How far I do
not know yet. If the delay is not too long and all continues to
work well, I'll expand the placement of the search feature to the
menu, or the header or footer area on every page. In the
meantime, please use the search box on the Main Home page while I
continue to evaluate it.

the tally sheet, the $.50 increase in prices is not included. It should
be included in your money handed in to Avona. If you have any questions
regarding this matter, please contact Avona PTA at 610-559-1912.

Hands-on Pottery Demonstration
January 17, 2006
A HUGE thank you goes out to Rick Hoffman for such a wonderful job. Rick
from Hoffman studios was the artist in residence for all art classes.
Mr. Hoffman showed the students how to work with clay by hand, the
spinning wheel and described how it goes to the kiln and gets glazed
before going to the kiln again.
In the fifth grade class I attended, students were informed by Mr.
Hoffman on the history of pottery and it's value in archeology. This
while also demonstrating how to make different items such as mugs, bowls
and vases.
The students then had an opportunity to cut their own clay tiles for
a mosaic he will design for the school. We hope to have the Mosaic in
and on display in the spring.
Miss Hosford and Mrs. Cimino were in amazement as much as the students.
Everyone truly did enjoy themselves. AWESOME JOB!

Extra Avona All Star back packs are available for purchase for
$6.00 if anyone is interested in having an additional bag.
In preparation for Jump Rope for Heart, Easton Area School District
students will be coming to Avona to show off their jump roping
abilities. The assembly is scheduled for February 7th at 10:30 am and
will end by 11:15 am.
Jump Rope for Heart is slated to be held at Avona on February 27th
and 28th.
The Math 24 Club has begun but there is still a few licenses left
for purchase. Each license is $6.75 and can be done from home if you
are not available for the Thursday after school program. This
program is designed to help your child build their math skills at
their own pace. If you are interested in the program or have any
questions, please contact Cathy Smyth at 610-438-3833.
Abbi D. and her father, Brianna H., Alec B. and Kiana U. made the

January 13th to cover the event.
Many families came out that evening to enjoy in some traditional
board games and some not so traditional ones. Door prizes were
awarded such at Othello, Scramblers, KerPlunk, Mexican Train Dominos
and more.
Thanks to the Express Times and for everyone who made that night
possible.
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Avona PTA
Mitten Drive. Over 70 mittens, gloves, hats and scarves were
collected! These were donated to the Third Street Alliance in
Easton where they will be no doubt be greatly appreciated. GREAT
JOB!

We would like to thank Wendi Dougherty, Mrs. Golden and the Arts

GREAT JOB!
Jonathan F. in Kindergarten was the big winner. His name was
drawn as the winner for the Crayola gift basket that was
on display in the office for the past two weeks.
There are a few reminders for collecting the Box Tops. Make
sure you trim all Box Tops. You MUST then staple, glue or tape
the Box Tops onto the Blast-Off Space entry forms. Twenty five
Box Tops goes on each sheet. Additional forms are available in
all classrooms. If you choose not to cut and attach your Box
Tops to the entry form, that is ok BUT it will not count as a
valid entry for the contest.
REMEMBER, NO Campbell's UPC's or label are allowed on these
entry forms. Campbell soup labels and UPC's should be sent to
school and deposited in the two bins located in the foyer by the
front door or at the top of the steps on the second floor.
Thanks to all the labels sent in last year, the PTA
received a sports ball pack, a plastic pig for don't steal the
bacon, and a multi sport kit which included many items. These
items will be used by the teachers and students for recess.
Awesome job!
Avona held a coin drive to
collect money for the Hurricane Katrina victims. Mr. Wright promised
to match the donations received during the first week (up to $200).
So far Avona has raised $1,091.76 which includes Mr. Wrights
matching gift of $200. Thank you to all our students for the
generosity and ensuring that Mr. Wright is now $200 lighter.
Students gathered around the flag pole Wednesday morning and sang

On Sept. 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key witnessed the British fleets
shelling of Fort McHenry near Baltimore, MD. That morning, he was so
delighted to see the American flag still flying over the fort that
he began a poem to commemorate the occasion. This poem we know today
as the “The Star-Spangled Banner” was officially made the national
anthem by Congress in 1931, although it already had been adopted as
such by the army and the navy.
The students listed below each won a poster from the Fall
Book Fair. The PTA is allowed to keep the posters that are
used for display. For each class, the PTA picks a
students names out of a hat randomly.

The PTA would like to thank all those who participated in the
Fall Book Fair. The PTA was able to raise $615 to go towards
assemblies, class trips and the many other functions paid for by
PTA. Putting books in the hands of the Avona students and
sending them on new reading adventures can not be more
profitable than that.
Special thanks goes out to Fran Zaragoza, Cathy Smyth, Toniann
Johnson, Dawn Purcell, Liz Hanni, Stacy Izarek and Connie Oneill for volunteering their time to make this event possible.
The PTA would also like to acknowledge Mary Cummings from
Scholastic for showing us the way.
Birthday Club September 11, 2005
School Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Kaye, invites fifth graders to
a Birthday Club. Students celebrating their Birthday during the
current month will be invited to attend lunch with Mrs. Kaye and
their other Birthday buddies. They will sing "Happy Birthday"
and be able to pick a goodie from the Goodie Jar. Attention Parents: September
14th, 2005 will be declared as red, white, and blue day to celebrate
the National Anthem and our Constitution. Your child can show their
patriotism by wearing the colors of our nation, RED, WHITE and BLUE!
Please keep in mind that face paints, water soluble hair dyes or any
other items of clothing that may violate the dress code will not be
allowed.
Avona held a class reunion time on Thursday afternoon. Each
student left their homeroom and visited their teacher and fellow
students of last year. They shared vacations they took, summer
activities and discussed the class they are in now. Fifth grade
teachers took the kindergarten students into the all purpose
room to share a classical game of duck duck goose. Fun was had
by all.
Avona PTA has ordered Recycling cans for all classrooms. This
will help students get in the habit of recycling. These cans are
being purchased with the OfficeDepot Gift Card the PTA was
awarded last year from the PA State PTA for its' increase in
membership for the 2004 - 2005 school year.
Mr. Wright invited all Kindergarten parents to meet in the
All Purpose Room to Cry in their Coffee. With the first day
of school sometimes being a traumatic one for the
students, parents leave their child not knowing if they have
settled down or stopped crying. Mr. Wright decided to make
that transition easier for the parents. He assured all
parents that the students were doing well and in to their
classroom just fine.
While there were not many children crying, we could not say the
same about the parents. But this was also a great opportunity
for these parents to get to know each other and share in the
mornings events. What a great start to the new year. Coffee and
donuts were supplied by the PTA.
For each person that
signs up for the Box Tops Booster Club between July 1, 2005 and
February 28, 2006, the PTA will earn 5 Bonus Box Tops (.50¢)for the
school. If each student had two signups, it would pay for an
assembly.
Be sure to tell friends and family to join the Box Tops Booster
Club on-line at: www.boxtops4education.com.

the more contest entries one earns. Each contest entry increases
ones chance of winning.
Each student that brings in 25 Box Tops has a chance to win.
To help you with collecting the 25 BoxTops, all Students were
provided with a Blast-Off Map. If it was lost or you would
like one for
your
next 25 BoxTops, you can open another one by clicking
HERE
or on the BlastOff picture to the left. Once the PDF opens, you
can print as many copies as needed in black & white or color.
Good luck and keep collecting! Every Box Top counts!
New Avona Sportswear Logo
August 3, 2005

The Sportswear sale is run to promote school spirit. The
PTA does not run this sale as a fundraiser. All items are sold at
cost. Check back here at the PTA web site for the sale dates

eight PTA board members leaving. Not that they have not enjoyed
their time at Avona, but that their children are moving up to
middle school.
Those exiting are; Cathy Smyth, Karen Stahl, Sheri Cawley,
Etta Sortino, Diane Santo, Janet Border, Scott Border and Bill
Smyth. We need to fill the positions of President, Vice
President, Secretary, Hospitality, Yearbook, School Store,
Fundraising, Health and Safety, Communications & Publicity and
Webmaster.
Please consider helping in any way you can. Check out these and
other positions by clicking on the committee name under the
EXECUTIVE BOARD menu. There is a brief
description of each committee. Ideally, we would like
someone interested in a position to work as a co-chair during
the upcoming school year to learn the position.
We are in need of your help to keep the programs currently at
Avona and this web site in place. For more information, please
contact the PTA at
AvonaPTA@Yahoo.com.
Thanks to your outstanding support of our fundraisers, the PTA
has a cash surplus this year. The PTA voted at it's last meeting to
purchase welcome mats for the
inside
of all three entrances to the building. The new mats will be
in place for the start of the 2005-06 school year.
The layout of the mats are shown here. The design is
surrounded by a beveled 2" black border transitioning to the floor
to help prevent people from tripping on the edge.
