As part of our Family
Fun Nights, The Discovery Center of Bethlehem came to Avona on Friday, March 11, 2004
for two hours starting at 6pm. A vat of liquid nitrogen, a hot air gun,
some balloons and a Van de Graaf Generator helped make for a very fun and
educational evening. The attending students became familiar with matter
and hopefully picked up some tips that might help them with the April
science fair.

The Kindergarten through fourth grade students received a visit
from Officer Phil on December 2nd.

Following a fire drill on October 8, students assembled in the
multi-purpose room to hear Wilson Borough Fire Fighters describe some of
the tools they use during a real fire. They showed us axes, hoses, air
tanks and other tools.
The fire fighters also explained the importance of smoke detectors in a
home. The had a smoke machine and had the smoke alarms go off so the
children could hear what they sound like. They suggested to the children
to remind their parents to change the batteries twice a year when the
clocks go back and move ahead.
The firefighters also demonstrated how they might carry a person
out of a fire. They used none other than the Principal of the school, Mr.
Wright. He was securely strapped into a rescue stretcher and lifted to safety. It created quite
a chuckle from the students.
Sparky the Firedog
arrived and awarded the prizes for the poster contest. Sparky demonstrated
how to get out of a fire safely getting as low to the ground as possible
and crawling quickly to the nearest exit.
Box top winners were announced and the fall
fundraiser was kicked off. The kids were given instructions on safe
selling and shown prizes they can earn.

On Monday, September 13th
from 6 to 7pm we learned to juggle (some more than others...) with
our children. Not only were balls and scarves being juggled, but
plates were spinning on sticks high overhead. It seemed everyone was
having a great time trying to juggle something or spin a plate. The
kids had their own assembly during school and were able to get a
head start on us. And did it show! They were awesome!!
Dave started by having the kids take the
stage to show what they learned earlier that day. Then the
parents showed what they learned in the 45 minutes or so we spent
learning. Some caught on right away, some like myself had a tougher go
of it.
The evening assembly ended with Dave Finnegan
juggling three items the audience was invited to bring in as a
challenge. If Dave failed to juggle the three items for ten
throws, he would take a shaving cream pie in the face. If he
succeeded, a standing ovation was due.
The audience applause meter voted on a hoola-hoop,
a large orange traffic cone and a motorcycle helmet. Unfortunately for Dave, he only made it halfway through the challenge. The helmet seemed to be the major problem. The children squealed
in delight as Dave graciously allowed a young girl to pie him. If you missed it, you missed out on a great exciting time.
Why juggle? Juggling helps improve
concentration, behavior, reading, writing, patience and persistence.
It's also allot of fun!
The
Juggling for Success program emphasizes students' emotional,
psychological, and physical health needs, and it reinforces academic
success.
