Building the Mosaic

Mr. Hoffman runs an artist in residency program he calls “E Pluribus Unum”, which means "From many, one" or "Out of many, one". Mr. Hoffman spent two days as artist in residence with the students and staff of Avona in early January.

While at Avona, he demonstrated the potters wheel while teaching about the geological origins of clay, geometry of form, chemistry of clay and glazes, historical and cultural significance of ceramics, the importance of clay in modern daily life, and, most importantly, the benefits of a creative mind.

Near the end of each class, students and staff each cut their own clay tiles for the mosaic. Each class cuts a different shape of tile in the clay. All of these different shapes will come together in the final mosaic.

Mr. Hoffman took the tiles back to his studio where he spent an additional 40-45 hours of studio time to color, fire and carefully assemble the Mosaic before delivering it to Avona.

You can see all the work Mr. Hoffman puts into finishing the Mosaic on his website at this URL: http://www.hoffmanstudios.com/index_files/Page372.html.
