ACT 72 - Homeowner Tax Relief Act Information

This summer, Pennsylvania signed into law the Homeowners Tax Relief Act.  The main purpose of the law is to provide property tax relief to resident homeowners.  This relief will come through a homestead and/or farmstead exclusion, which means that a portion of the assessed value of your property will be excluded from the property tax, thus lowering your real estate school taxes.  To qualify as a homestead, the residence must be the permanent primary residence on which property taxes are paid.  It is important that each residential property owner complete the homestead exclusion application received in the mail and return it to:

Northampton County

PO Box 928

Bangor, PA  18013

The deadline to submit the application for property tax relief is March 1, 2005.  However, we recommend that you complete the form and return it at your earliest convenience.

You will receive notification regarding your approval/denial from the county assessor within 30 days after the receipt of your application.  If for any reason your application is denied, you will be given an opportunity to appeal the county's determination.  Should you have any questions, please contact your county assessor's office at (610) 559-3041.
