WILSON PARTNERS IN EDUCATION GRANT RECIPIENTS The mission of the Wilson Area Partners in Education Foundation is to support the academic, athletic, and extra-curricular programs of the Wilson Area School District. This year the Foundation awarded five grants that provide the financial support for a variety of initiatives that will directly benefit children next year. The 2010 grant recipients are:
Congratulations grant recipients, and thank you to all who applied. HORIZONTAL SALARY MOVEMENT As per the collective bargaining agreement, requests for a horizontal salary movement are due now. Please send your request to Lynn at administration. VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH – Michele Deutsch has volunteered at Wilson Borough Elementary in selected kindergarten and first grade classrooms for the past two months. She works closely with our kindergarten students monitoring small groups for kidwriting, as well as working with individual students in the area of math remediation. In our first grade classrooms, Michele assists individual students and small groups during writing workshop. She monitors reading comprehension during classroom instruction. In addition, Michele volunteered to read during our Literacy Day event in March of this year. In retirement, Michele continues to be a valuable asset to the children and staff members of Wilson Borough Elementary school. Wilson Area Partners in Education 5K Race and 1 Mile Fun Walk - June 19, 2010 @ 9:00 AM - Registration will begin 7:45 a.m. on race day. Awards given for the fastest overall male and female, top three finishers in each age category, and fastest Clydesdale (male) and Filly (female). $18 per person or $35 for a family of three before May 28, 2010, $20 per person or $40 for a family of three after May 28, 2010, and $10.00 for cross-country team members. Family entries must be mailed together. Entry includes quality moisture wicking t-shirt, bagels, and an opportunity to support a worthwhile cause. RECOGNITION Each month we highlight students and staff within the District for their outstanding contributions: Patti Ulshafer, Emily Zimmer, and Megan Wert for their work in planning and coordinating our successful 1st grade Mother Goose Performance. The student performances were appreciated by the large crowd of parents and friends that attended the show. Jess Ryan for being selected to receive the Celebrate Literacy Award from the Colonial Association of Reading Educators. The purpose of this award is to identify and recognize a local individual who has made significant contributions to literacy. Jess will be recognized at a celebration dinner at Cedar Crest College. BethAyn Tarsi for her hard work and dedication while at PLMS. She did a wonderful job helping operations run smoothly. Cathy Smyth for her diligence in maintaining the website. It is up-to-date, understandable and very nicely done. Brenda Carvis, Rayanne Parry, Linda Harper, Patti Moser, Rebecca Bennett, Rebecca Dickson, Rebecca Jabeir, and Joe Wolfe for their hard work and success with Career Day at Williams Township Elementary. Traci Knopf for being nominated for Colonial Intermediate School Counselors Association “School Counselor of the Year” Award. Lauren Matthews for a super job developing and producing the “No Place for Hate” multicultural moments videos at Avona Elementary. Jami Silfies and Dawn Seiple for their dedication in working with students to produce an excellent middle school yearbook. Regina Moyer and Michael Burke for volunteering their time to help a student who needed special assistance during the PSSA testing week. Erica Brodhead for her work with Avona students to produce the school newspaper – The Avona Express. The Debate – Finals team of Zachary Weidner, Kathleen Kelly, Benjamin Graybill and Jessica Lilley led by their advisor Mrs. Lisa Spilner. This group consistently won and advanced through various qualifying rounds to qualify for the final and took first place. I regret if someone was missed. BOARD MEETING UPDATE Below is a summary of action taken by the Board in April: ATHLETIC COMMITTEE MEETING - There was an Athletic Committee meeting prior to the general Board meeting. Under Policy - The Board adopted a change to Policy 5127 - Graduation Awards. Under Finance – Numerous bid items were approved. Under Personnel - There are numerous items under Personnel that the Board approved. These included: Resignations of two coaches. § Change of status of two coaches. § Leave for two professional employees. § Approval of 11 substitute teachers and one substitute bus driver.
Under Miscellaneous - The Wilson Area Board of School Directors made the recommendation that The State Legislature immediately review the anticipated rate spike during the 2012-13 fiscal year and beyond and consider immediately amending the Public School Employees' Retirement Code.
